A baseline is used for comparison and analysis of current or past values. Product lines can be measured for sales through determining a baseline, as can the effectiveness of an ad or the placement of the ad’s effectiveness. It is considered a web site’s pre optimization average.

Typical conversion rate, average bounce rates for top landing pages, how much time the average visitor spends on your site and other engagement metrics that are bespoke to the company.
